Acupuncture is used today for relieving pain, improving the body's defenses and strengthening our internal environments to fight disease. Likewise, Chinese herbal formulas can improve the body's ability to fight disease by regulating, nourishing and cleaning our internal environments.

Overall Acupuncture and Chinese herbs work as a team in treatment of most conditions though each has its separate strengths and weakness to fight disease or to improve the mobility of our body.

Today, western researchers investigate acupuncture more than ever before due to its ability to relieve pain, reduce spasm, and improve healing time to muscle and joint damage. Acupuncture uses anatomically correct points that aid healing. These points have taken generations of knowledge to assess and compile giving acupuncture an unrivaled position when needles are used as a form of treatment.

Likewise, Chinese herbal formula being synergistic have few side effects. Working on the nature of herbs and the knowledge of which herbs improve a particular part of our body best then we are able to assist our body to cleanse and repair disease producing or aggravating substances.

MUSCLES AND JOINTS

Acupuncture is one of the most effective modalities for relieving muscle and joint pain. Acute muscular pain from overstrain of muscles have been shown to improve with the use of Acupuncture. Specific points are used and though painful points may be observed the needling of such points is not recommended unless as a last resort. The Acupuncturist will isolate the muscle damage and use points according to the presenting pain and muscle involvement.

Joints are continually under forces of muscular tension and become damaged or worn. When treating joint conditions the Acupuncturist will assess for underlying conditions or ask for a referral to a Doctor for medical findings such as X-Ray, Ultra Sound, CT scan or MRI to determine the extent or location of an injury. Acupuncture is effective in relieving and mending long term joint problems by stimulating blood to or into a joint cavity and balancing the muscles associated to joint stability.

Treatment times vary according to the type of pain experienced. For Acute strains several treatments will constitute a course while Chronic or degenerative conditions are assessed and advice is given in advance about an expected treatment course.

Chinese herbal formulas in use today are mostly the same as hundreds of years ago. In general these group of formula have a washing or cleaning action on the muscles and joints and in a lot of formula will aid internal organ function also. With over 60 Chinese Herbal Formula dedicated to the Muscle and Joint Systems there is a good chance your condition has been treated many times in the past with significant results.

DIAGNOSIS
Introduction to diagnosis using Chinese Medical Theory

Diagnosis includes comprehensive questioning relating to a person's health including pulse and tongue inspection, investigation to symptoms and signs with current medical history or diagnosis. With this information a practitioner is able to gain insight into general to specific health conditions.

Most patients who visit a Chinese Medicine Practitioner have already been to several different types of medical therapy and have a very good idea of what is ailing them. For those who have not it is advisable to have a consultation with your general practitioner to discuss your condition. Likewise, after your appointment you may be advised to have a medical check up so as to obtain crucial information such as blood count, x-ray, CT scan or ultra sound to confirm a diagnosis.

Chinese Herbs are an integral part of Chinese medicine and are prescribed after the physician has made a differential diagnose of your body's condition. Chinese diagnosis uses a system where the human body is subdivided into 143 different internal syndromes. Each syndrome is a collection of symptoms.

Syndromes of Chinese medicine indicate where our body is most affected by illness. As we age different combinations of syndromes produce complex disease processes, which we need to understand and treat to aid good physical recovery. Supplementing the body with the correct herbal formula or acupuncture point prescription requires a great skill and is testament to the many practitioner's whose prescription are correct obtaining improvement of their patients condition.

Chinese herbal formula or acupuncture point prescription are seen as a key, while the disease process which is ever changing is the lock. To break the lock one must first insert a key to disrupt the progressions of disease. Both treatments utilize the same concept of syndromes, which today are seen as the Human Science of Chinese Medicine.

Acupuncture addresses the importance for our body's ability to have a balance between all our internal organs including the ability to aid the regulating of emotions and thinking processes. The link between the acupuncture channel system and the internal working of organs, muscles, nerves, lymphatic glands, arteries and veins is well documented.

Acupuncture can be used to treat muscular and Joint problems that develop either from injury or from long-term wear and tear or use of joints, tendons and muscles. Structural Acupuncture is able to reintroduce blood flow and correct the flow of body fluid and lymphatic fluid to areas of inflammation or degeneration. Unlike dry needling that disrupts rehabilitation structural acupuncture copes by using ashi and distal point prescriptions.

The use of massage including myofascial stripping and localized alignment of muscles and joints affected by muscle spasm, knots or muscle adhesions are addressed as necessary. Individually or a combination of these pathologies will affect the correct balance between the right and left sides of the body. Correcting muscle alignment or groups of muscles needing alignment gives improvement to the body’s balance and mobility.

Muscular conditions of mal alignment can include the raise hip or hip alignment imbalance. This alignment problem can be reduced by acupuncture and massage techniques. Raised hip puts pressure on you spine that is secondary to causative features.

CHINESE HERBAL FORMULA
Understanding the basis of Chinese herbal formula

Chinese herbal formulas are given a place in Chinese medicine at the core of medical knowledge and its treatment schedules.

When we subdivide the human body into its various systems (nervous, hormonal, lymphatic, muscular and cardio vascular) that help generate life we must conform treatment to benefit these systems. This will give us a multi-disciplinary approach to improvement of our body.

Likewise, Chinese herbal formulas are made up from a combination of herbs. The formula may have originated as smaller formula such as two or three herb formula or can be additions to existing formula to create new formulas. These changes are an attempt to treat the ever-changing progression to pathology leading to new or advanced medical conditions.

With over 150 to 200 different common formula it is a task to understand which formula is best to suit which condition. We also have to keep in mind of any medications that are being used for the patients presenting condition and the use of certain classes of herbs that can produce side effects if given for an incorrect rational.

The theory to match the pathology of a condition to the property or effect on the human body by a herb, the location in the body best helped by a herb and the constitution of the patient is the basis for prescription. For example if a person suffers from stiff or dryness in the neck muscles we can use a formula that contains a herb (usually the primary or the first herb found in the formula list) for moistening the neck. The same herb may be found in other herbal formula but as a lower or less rating herb in the formula such as a secondary herb, conducting herb or a harmonizing herb. When this is evident then the primary herb is always the major or most necessary herb in a formula while the other herbs have specific roles and titles in a formula. This specific foundation is necessary to enforce the best-desired outcome for a patient. Herbs are selected on this criteria and formula are prescribed to reverse or diminish harmful pathologies.

So we have the general criteria for the selection of a formula. Match the pathology of a condition to the property and site of best improved by a herb. With this understanding we can then venture into the realm of over 2000 year trial and error to come out today and prescribe formula known for the beneficial activities in our bodies with small or slight detrimental side effect’s. This is what is called a synergistic action to the human body.

INITIAL CONSULTATION

Your initial consultation will include a history of current symptoms and signs as well as any medical conditions diagnosed by your GP or other medical practitioner. The objective of this assessment is to assess your current physiological status so as to administer a herbal formula to match the diagnostic criteria.

Best to bring your medical tests and examination results for assessment. Most patients have already been given a diagnosis or have been to practitioners and have not achieved the satisfactory result they need. This is why we will need to compare your current medical diagnosis to the most recent tests and treatment strategies you have tried.

People who need medical prescriptions are on the rise these days. Chinese herbs have a very good relationship with modern medications and are regularly prescribed in conjunction with each other in China’s hospital systems. The common mistake is to select the wrong class of herbs that will contain herbal ingredients that counteract the effect of the prescription. Selecting the right formula of herbs will not cause an antagonistic effect but will aid the medical prescriptions actions.

When a diagnosis of a certain disease or syndrome is given we must adhere to the medical advice and treatment given by the referring GP and consult the patient on how best to correct or diminish the severity of symptoms that are the most aggravating.

A patient suffering from pain in the abdomen caused by IBS where the pain is the most distressing symptom then we must first address the pain. When the pain is relieved by treatment we will address the next most distressing symptom such as abdominal distension, frequency of bowel motion, ongoing reactions to certain foods, stress aggravating factors, etc.

We also will look at the cause of a disease or the most common causes of a disease. Giving advice on this is an attempt to increase effectiveness of the herbal formula to generate improved health. An example is lifestyle, exercise, types of food to avoid, stress coping skills and body massage techniques to increase circulation. This advice though it may seem simplistic advice we must keep in mind the whole situation the patient is in.

Once the initial symptoms and signs are collected, the history of the patient recorded, the tests analysed and the patient comfortable that enough information is gathered we can then assess the direction the treatment will take.

Treatment strategies can vary from patient to patient so we need to give you a general idea how long it will take for a given treatment. The general rule is one month of treatment for each month of the disorder either presenting or taking to develop. So we can safely say a person surrering from IBS for the past 12 months with a history of abdominal pain with out diagnosis for 2 years will take 3 months of herbal treatment to stabilize the condition or decrease the symptoms.

Irregularities can happen and often do when assessing deterrent people with similar or the same problem. This is taken into consideration in our treatment strategy. The saying “no two people are alike” is a good comparison to this thinking.

Fortunately part of our diagnostic skill is to be able to differentiate these categories. Similar to a psychologist who will assess depression in a patient the psychologist knows not all types of depression have the same cause. Likewise not all IBS patients can be treated with the same formula for a successful treatment outcome.

An example is the way we react to stress. People react differently to stress. Some have no hunger when suffering stress while others compensated by emotional eating. One-person’s digestive system is empty while the other person could be said to have food retention present. Even though both patients are diagnosed with IBS we cannot give the same herbal formula for the correct treatment rational to occur.

This is the basis of diagnosis, the ability to differentiate the underlying pathology of patients with the same medical diagnosis. In other words different people have different causes for the same condition.

Once we have done our assessment we can then approach a strategy for treatment. As a general rule conditions with short duration such as common cold, sore throat, acute abdominal pain have a short treatment. When a disease is presented such as diabetics then a longer treatment will be required to improve the symptoms and signs.

AUTO IMMUNE DISORDERS

There are many causes of Auto immune disorders but when looking at an overall picture of this group of conditions we can see that three main areas of our body are involved, our nervous system, our endocrine system and Immune factors such as IgG, etc. When we combine aggravating factors such as stress, poor sleep, anxiety, emotional exhaustion and genetic factors our body starts to break down our own makeup.

Cupping – Cellulite, adhesions, myofascial stripping, headache, cholesterol

There are various types of cupping available so a brief description of each is listed below.

Cupping is the action of placing an object the shape of a cup made of plastic, silicone, glass or bamboo on the skin surface. By removing the air in the cup we can get pressure so the cup attaches.

Plastic cups come with a pump that can be attached to the top of the cup. Silicone cups are compressed then released on the skin, while glass and bamboo cups use a lighted cotton ball to cause a vacuum.

A cup is placed on a particular place to cause a drawing up of underlying tissues. The pressure is minimal but enough to release substances that are located below the skin layer and deep enough to reach the muscular layer.

Cupping is not painful but rather a pleasant feeling of pulling or stretching. Fibromyalgia or chronic muscular painful condition sufferers should let the practitioner know so as to adjust the treatment.

Silicone Cupping – Cellulite, lymphatic congestion

Silicone cups are a gentle form of cupping. Silicone cups can be used on more sensitive areas such as with cellulite or along the course of lymphatic system. Placing the silicone cups in warm water increases their benefit.

Cupping the cellulite will increase blood flow to the local area, this in turn support metabolic uptake of congested substances.

The release of red blood cells, oxygen and lymphatic fluid improve the metabolism to the local area being cupped.

Dry Cupping – Bronchitis, wry Neck, low back pain

Dry cupping is used for muscular pain from coughing, muscular spasm from coughing, chest congestion, neck and lower back tension from occupational stress of sitting or standing for long periods of time.

Many substances are found in the skin layer to the intramuscular layer of our body and gentle cupping can bring these substances to our skin surface.

The skin is very vascular. It is rich in red blood cells and can carry away substances drawn up more quickly that if left at the deeper layers.

The discoloration of the skin after cupping is determined by the amount of these substances you have accumulated. Some common substances include carbon dioxide, lymph fluid, metabolic wastes and cholesterol.

Wet Cupping – Hijama – Mental stress, headache, cholesterol

Hijama is the use of cups with the addition of placing a small cut in the skin to release some blood from the patient. This treatment has a long history and is beneficial to improving general health, headache, lowering of cholesterol, decreasing mental stress, headache and relaxing muscular tension to name a few.

Recent research indicates that hijama lowers serum lipid concentrations of healthy young men. Serum lipoproteins, especially LDL cholesterol is decreased by up to 10% and is seen as a preventative measure against atherosclerosis.

Hijama uses stationary cups at specific sights from the head to the feet. Treatment usually takes 1 hour.

Sliding Cupping – Myofascial congestion, adhesions

This type of cupping treats muscular tension and knots by sliding the cup along the course of a muscle to break up muscle fiber tension. The muscle is put on a stretch and this causes the fibers to open allowing a flushing of red blood into a tight, strained, spasm, rigid or knotted muscle.

The action of sliding cupping is similar to the massage method of lock and block used in myofascial stripping. Common muscles treated include trapezius, latissimus dorsi, quadratus lumborum, and rhomboid.

Lymphatic cupping – Lymphedema, weigh gain, infections

Our lymph system has no pump like our arteries and veins. The fluid in the lymph system relies on our abdominal peristalsis or movement and our physical muscular movement to circulate.

Lymph fluid is made up of several byproducts from the spaces between our body structures. Some of these substances include excess fats, proteins and interstitial fluid. Lymph glands also contain white blood cells, so bacteria and cancer cells are killed in lymph glands.

Cupping and sliding cupping using silicone cups move lymph fluid in the same way by physical movement. Cupping stretches the lymphatic vessels and causes the movement of the lymphatic fluid in them.

Myofascial cupping – muscle skin adhesion, repetitive injury

Muscular strains, cramps or over use of muscles can lead a decrease in range of motion to a muscle. This then leads to over use of surrounding muscles to the damaged one.

We can increase our muscles range of motion by cupping circulating a flushing of red blood cells to dehydrated or overused muscles.

Myofascial cupping can treat adhesion, maintain functional soft tissue, encourage hydration to muscles and release metabolic congestion from overuse in manual work or sport.

Moxibustion – improve blood flow to the uterus - infertility

When dried herb mugwort is burnt it is burnt it is called moxibustion. There are many reasons to use heat on the body surface and moxibustion is a method perfected over thousands of years.

Today the use of mugwort moxibustion in a modern air-conditioned office is limited due to the smoke it releases. The Chinese have perfected an electric heater that can reproduce the therapeutic effects of mugwort.

Heating the skin surface and having that heat penetrate to the lower layers such as the muscle layer is difficult as the skin acts as a barrier to stop heat penetrating our body.

At the clinic we use heaters designed in China to overcome this problem. The heat passes through a ceramic tube then through a specially designed coating that changes the property of the heat. This heat is able to penetrated to the muscular layer.

This heating is essential to get the maximum amount of red blood cells to the area. The more red blood cells the better the effect of the acupuncture treatment.

Blood - nutrition, white blood cells and lymphatic stimulation released in local sights aids the recovery of muscular or nerves. Muscular-nervous tension, muscular knots, adhesion, strains and rigidity from over use can all be treated with moxibustion.

Infertility can be treated with moxibustion. We use moxi to increase the blood supply to the lower abdominal area as well as the low back. This increase in blood will nourish, wash and strengthen the reproductive system.
